VACUUM STATE
“I chose to create a world that flows without physical energy. I call it the Vacuum State. A place where the laws of physics are twisted and reverie leads. A universe where a series of broken symmetries do not even begin to make sense. I see the human body extrapolated and morphed into abstract shapes and forms, letting reality trick the eye and play with what is and isn’t real.”
- Katie Tubbing
Now showing at EM Studio Gallery in Amsterdam!
VACUUM STATE is a multidisciplinary project which combines photography, film and music in order to bring Katie Tubbing’s new clothing collection to life.
The photographs and film have been captured by Mikela Koressi.
In a time of mass production, consumers are searching for instant gratification through purchasing more and more disposable products. We want to counter this by focusing on preservation in combination with a slow fashion perspective.
Money functions as its own type of religion, for what is money, if not a shared fiction? The garments presented in the photographs aim to evoke a strong emotional reaction and in combination with intense light, represent moments of spiritual awakening in consumer consciousness.
We reject the consumer model of fast fashion by presenting an alternative that is slowly handmade with love. The goal of this project is not to sell the collection but to show the world the possibilities of handcraft as well as present a slower more sustainable approach to dressing the human body.
In order to stop global warming, consumer consciousness needs to change. The work of Katie Tubbing is slow fashion and focuses on upcycling and creating intimacy with a garment. By toeing the line between art and fashion we want to allocate more than monetary value to a piece. By creating interest in locally handmade garments we hope to reignite appeal in made-to-measure pieces that tell stories, thus making deeper connections with the consumer and the piece. Instead of buying ten new garments every month, which are poor quality and will end up in landfills, one could buy one garment that speaks to you more deeply, existing as both an art piece and fashion.
VACUUM STATE was shot at an old Abbey which has been preserved over the years. It is a beautiful estate in Belgium open for visitors and enjoyed by hundreds. Because of its strong and solid foundation it has stood the test of time as we hope these garments will as well.
